Why People Commit Adultery

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

It is a common myth that men cheat whereas women are completely faithful.  The unfortunate truth, however, is that nearly 60% of women claim to have had an adulterous affair.  By looking at the reasons why both men and women cheat, you can understand some of the motivations behind adultery.

Why Men Cheat
The most common reason for men to cheat is that they are dissatisfied with the sexual activity in their relationship.  Perhaps they are not having sex often enough, or they are craving more excitement in the bedroom.  Many men are afraid of suggesting new ideas to their regular partners, so they look outside the relationship.  Even satisfied men may cheat if their regular lover is not available – on a business trip, for example.

Some men feel that cheating is a natural prerogative, because the male of the species is driven to spread his genes around.  Others may commit adultery after a child has been born, because he is feeling abandoned because the baby is suddenly the center of his wife’s attention.

Men may feel vulnerable to an affair during a mid-life crisis, after a setback in his career, or during times of financial difficulty.

Why Women Cheat
Women who feel ignored or taken for granted often look for satisfaction outside of their relationship.  The most common reason for a woman to commit adultery is that her emotional needs are not being met at home.  Men at the start of a new relationship are often more romantic and passionate, more expressive of their feelings, and more appreciative and attentive.

Women may start feeling vulnerable about their appearance as they grow older, making it tempting to look outside the relationship for a man who will confirm her desirability.

Why Both Genders Cheat

Both men and women can start to wander if their partner undergoes a change like becoming meaner, sloppier, or less attractive.  Infidelity also breeds more adultery – many people whose partners have cheated on them take revenge by having an affair themselves.  “The grass is always greener” is a dangerous outlook that can lead to adultery, as people tend to overlook the flaws of their partner at the start of a relationship, and to imagine an idyllic relationship with a different lover.

Recognizing the Warning Signs of Adultery

Monday, April 13th, 2009

If you fear that your lover is cheating on you, you should learn to recognize the warning signs of adultery. While any of these signs could be completely innocent, if the indications add up you may have an unfaithful lover on your hands.

Adultery Symptom One: A Change in the Bedroom

Many people know that if their lover stops showing much interest in the bedroom, it could mean that he or she has found another outlet for their passion. What many don’t realize, however, is that a sudden increase in sexual appetite is also a warning sign of adultery. Some people actually become invigorated by the act of adultery, and become more active in the bedroom when they are at home. Other changes in the bedroom that could indicate adultery include a heightened sense of adventure, unusual sexual requests, and the sudden use of new techniques or positions.

Adultery Symptom Two: A Sudden Sense of Secrecy

A second telltale sign that your lover is cheating on you is a sudden desire for privacy. He or she may open up a separate checking account, or have their credit card or cell phone bills sent to their office instead of their home. Before, they would leave their credit card receipts lying on the nightstand, but now you don’t see them anywhere. They might hide their car keys or start locking their laptop to keep you from snooping around. If you press them, their story might change or details might not match up.

Adultery Symptom Three: Physical Signs

Lipstick on the collar, foundation on the lapel, a whiff of an unfamiliar perfume or cologne on their clothing - these are all familiar signs of a cheating lover. A particularly sneaky lover might wash their clothing before they come home, so unfamiliar laundry scents or looking “too clean” can be warning signs as well. Furthermore, your lover might start taking more care of his or her appearance, dressing more sharply or going to the gym more often.

Adultery Symptom Four: A Bad Feeling in Your Gut

Oftentimes, people will subconsciously notice signs that their lover is committing adultery, and then dismiss them. Don’t shortchange yourself! Experts say that your instincts are usually the most reliable indication of an affair.
